49 days till Halloween [video] back-dated to the 13th

HELLO, SAFFRON CITY!

_{[Noise all up in your gear today. There is a happy old dude standing in a train station with his gear half sideways. He's in that goofy Hawiian shirt again and he's got sunglasses perched on his head.]

[It's not even sunny but THIS IS WHAT YOU WEAR WHEN YOU GO ON VACATION, DARN IT.]}

I decided to take the train instead of walking and I'm glad I did! I've never ridden anything that went so fast! I do plan on walking to Lavender in a few days, though. I'm curious to see what Kanto has to offer.

So! What's a body do in Saffron City?

_{[And so he stayed still.]

[Or as still as an excitable ex-skeleton could. He hadn't wandered far from the entrance. Just far enough to get a good look at one of the towering buildings. It almost felt like Saffron and Goldenrod were one big city.]}

_{[It didn't take TOO long for Heather to show her fluffy dandelion head.]

[But preceding HER arrival was a flutter of blue-black that swooped in the entrance and alighted on top of one of the little lamp posts, preening.]

[Then it looked at Jack and said:]}

_{[It took a moment for Jack to notice the bird pokemon because he was so enchanted with the city, but when he did he smiled. 83 He'd always loved them.]

[And then it called him a shitlord.]}

EXSCUSE ME?

_{[Fortunately, before the charming animal on the post had a chance to call him anything else, its trainer showed up.]}

_{[COMPLETELY UNAWARE THAT HER BIRD HAD JUST CALLED HIM A SHITLORD, Heather was jogging over from the entrance to the station, grinning.]}

_{[Jack turns to face Heather with a look that suggests some stranger just walked by and smacked him right in the face.]}

Oh! Glad you made it! Your, ah, friend came to keep me company. It's wonderful to see you! Have you gotten any taller?

Oh yeah, Wren flew ahead! Glad she found ya.

_{[Slowing to a halt next to the old man, Heather gives him a friendly (gentle) punch on the shoulder.]}

Har har. I'm done growing.

_{[Deciding to forget about Wren and her vocabulary for now, Jack makes a show out of rubbing his FEEBLE OLD ARM and stooping to the side after she's punhced him. He's grinning all the while though.]}

I'm an old man, Miss Mason! I'll fall apart! Now, where's this coffee place?

No you won't, you've got SKIN now, you giant baby.

_{[She laughs, though, and gestures to the entrance as she starts to walk.]}

It's not too far. Just a few blocks away, next to the Pokemon Center.

_{[Wren swoops down to land on her trainer's head, croaking. She gives Jack a smug look as she does. c:<]}

_{[He follows her, still grinning. He's keeping an eye on Wren though. He has half a mind to call out his own bird to keep her in check but knows that might just end up making it worse.]}

The train ride was excellent! I can't wait to see Lavender Town. I've been wanting to go there almost since day one. It's so strange to think how long ago that was...

_{[... Yeah, it... probably would. Wren plays well with others, but not really in a way that others appreciate. As Jack has probably guessed.]}

Yeah? It sure is somethin', isn't it? Beats the hell out of the subway trains back at home.

I'm not...entirely sure we had trains when I was alive. I know I haven't ridden any since I've been dead. If we needed to go anywhere, we just used the graveyard. There's a first time for everything!

Halloween has been around a long, long time. Maybe not in the way we think about it today, but...

I guess that makes sense. Sometime you oughta tell me about it.

_{[In school, history was a bore to Heather... but hearing it from someone who was THERE is another thing entirely!]}

I imagine they did. They were only for an evening. Some people made their own, though. The old stuff--the good costumes. Witches and ghosts and skeletons.

My dad never let me dress up as a witch when I was little. That was okay, since I usually wanted to be a dinosaur or something.

_{[Jack wonders about that and decides to ask later.]}

Dinosaur is a good choice! I'm trying to decide what I'd like to be this year, but I really need to focus on getting the haunted house up and running--the whole reason I've come all the way out here.

Yeah? I ... THINK you mentioned something about that.

It's like an inn, right?

A bit, yes, but on a smaller scale. It'll be a haunted bed and breakfast. If I can get my pokemon trained well enough, I'll have a special room where, if you can stay the whole night, the stay is free!

_{[She can't help but let out a chortle at the idea.]}

Haha, oh man. You mean like... poltergeists, rattling doors, banging on the walls, that kind of stuff?

Wouldn't catch me staying in a place like that in a hundred billion years, but there's gotta be some people who are into it.

Exactly! Voices in the night, bleeding walls, all of it! Why should I have to wait all year to scare people?

I guess there's no good reason that you shouldn't!

_{[They've arrived at the coffee place-- the Cafe Saffron, conveniently next to the Pokemon Center. Heather pauses before opening the door to go inside.]}

_{[Here, Jack tilts his head as they approach the shop. Heather always seemed the type to him who would love a good scare once in a while. OLD MAN POUT.]}
