HELLO, SAFFRON CITY!

_{[Noise all up in your gear today. There is a happy old dude standing in a train station with his gear half sideways. He's in that goofy Hawiian shirt again and he's got sunglasses perched on his head.]

[It's not even sunny but THIS IS WHAT YOU WEAR WHEN YOU GO ON VACATION, DARN IT.]}

I decided to take the train instead of walking and I'm glad I did! I've never ridden anything that went so fast! I do plan on walking to Lavender in a few days, though. I'm curious to see what Kanto has to offer.

So! What's a body do in Saffron City?

Dinosaur is a good choice! I'm trying to decide what I'd like to be this year, but I really need to focus on getting the haunted house up and running--the whole reason I've come all the way out here.

Yeah? I ... THINK you mentioned something about that.

It's like an inn, right?

A bit, yes, but on a smaller scale. It'll be a haunted bed and breakfast. If I can get my pokemon trained well enough, I'll have a special room where, if you can stay the whole night, the stay is free!

_{[She can't help but let out a chortle at the idea.]}

Haha, oh man. You mean like... poltergeists, rattling doors, banging on the walls, that kind of stuff?

Wouldn't catch me staying in a place like that in a hundred billion years, but there's gotta be some people who are into it.

Exactly! Voices in the night, bleeding walls, all of it! Why should I have to wait all year to scare people?

I guess there's no good reason that you shouldn't!

_{[They've arrived at the coffee place-- the Cafe Saffron, conveniently next to the Pokemon Center. Heather pauses before opening the door to go inside.]}

--But for the record, don't you DARE try any of that on me. _{[>8I SHE'S SERIOUS, BRO.]}

_{[Here, Jack tilts his head as they approach the shop. Heather always seemed the type to him who would love a good scare once in a while. OLD MAN POUT.]}

_{[SORRY TO DISAPPOINT, JACK. <8I SILENT HILL KINDA SUCKS THAT OUTTA YOU. At least when it comes to yourself.]}

_{[She backs up into the cafe, doing that two-fingered point, first to her own eyes and then to his.]}

Cuz if you did, I might have to kill ya.

_{[...Okay kid is serious. WELP he's sure she knows plenty of other people he can scare.]}

Tell you what. If you're in town sometime around October, you can come by and help scare people.

That sounds much more up my alley.

_{[She offers him a grin as she slides into one of the booths.]}

I'll keep that in mind.

_{[He sits across from her and grins all around the shop. Then he noticed it. The colors! The colors were what set Saffron and Goldenrod apart.]}

_{[He thatches his spidery fingers together and just enjoys the sounds of the cafe.]}

What have you been up to?

Mostly just hanging out.

Some friends have a house nearby... I go up there to bug them from time to time.

_{[The Justice Farm has no doubt gotten used to Heather's loud presence by now.]}

That's great! I'm not surprised that some people have decided to settle. I never expected to, but here I am. What about you? Are you and your father planning on finding a home eventually?

_{[She trails off, idly picking up one of the tiny laminated menus and scanning it.]}

I dunno. Dad hasn't brought it up or anything yet... but I know he's not super into traveling.

... But at the same time... I've been here so long without having a PLACE, you know? It'd feel kind of weird.

... If Dad ever went home...

_{[His expression falls and he nods quietly. Jack could understand that. He'd been grateful for his own home. It was so sad to wake up every day in the Breeding Centre and find an empty place at the table.]}

Let's not dwell on that, then.

_{[Yeah.]

[She can't fool herself anymore. She knows that any day, any minute, the family she was lucky enough to regain could disappear without a trace. What was the point of settling down? If she somehow managed to scrape together to buy a house, and her father vanished... she knows already that she would lock the door and never go back.]}

SO.

Uh, this place has great cappuccinos.

Then that's what I'll have. I don't believe I've tried one. We drank a lot of plain old coffee at the Breeding Center.

Cappuccino! _{[Jack threw a hand in the air to get the attention of the workers.]}

I don't usually drink them but they're okay.

_{[She raises her hand as well, two fingers extended.]}

_{[It doesn't take long for their drinks to arrive. Jack accepts his and takes an experimental drink.]}
