31 days till Halloween [Action/ Video]

Have you ever seen such a big city?

_{[A winded Jack points his 'gear at the entrance to Goldenrod in all its glory. The camera is unsteady and the little Houndour puppy in the shot looks anxious. His trainer's been wobbling for a while.]}

Halloween Town was big, but this place is amazing! Hooh, it was...it was a hike, I'll say that much. My memory's a little off right now, but whoever said that forest was a maze, you were right. It's no Union Cave but...

Who can tell me anything about this place? How is everyone?

_{[Jack starts walking and gravitates towards a bench which he then flops down on and films the street traffic from. One the Houndour chases some Pidgies away from a nearby statue.]}

_{[Right answer! Taking a left here, and they're close enough to see this highly-spoken-of cafeteria place, the Hotel towering nearby.]}

That's the right attitude - and this is the place to try it.

_{[Jack is content to follow Coop to the TEMPLE OF CAKE. It's hard for him not to look like an overgrown kid. Coop seemed excited about it. That made HIM excited about it.]}

What else do they have besides cake?

_{[Sometimes, Coop is actually ten years old. The fact that this might rub off on others is only encouraged.]}

Pies, tarts - sandwiches or salads if you feel like eating something more akin to a meal - and of course drinks. There's lemonade, tea, and of course, almost any kind of coffee.

_{[Jack swallows. ;-; All of that sounds wonderful.]}

I think i could grow to like this place. The fishing town wasn't bad but...you had the choice of fish or...fish.

...I wonder where they got the fish.

_{[See, trust Coop. Food is heaven. He props Emily up on one arm and opens the door to the café and stops to think about that for a second, before he leaves it with a smile and gestures for Jack to go inside.]}

There are a lot of mysteries in Johto. I don't know if I'd like to think too hard about things like that.

_{[Jack grins gratefully to Coop and thanks him before recalling One into his poke'ball and walking inside. The Houndour didn't have very good inside manners.]

[OH MAN OH MAN EVERYTHING SMELLS GOOD EVERYTHING IS COLORFUL WHAT DO.]}

Oh wow!

_{[He lets the door close behind him and looks pleased with Jack's reaction, then gestures at a booth not too far away. He likes booths more than he does the regular table arrangements, which is one of the reasons he frequents this place in particular.]

[Sitting down and putting down Emily to snooze by his side, he's soon approached by a waitress. They know him pretty well here at this point and assumes he'd like coffee, which is, of course, utterly correct.]}

Thank you. And a cup for my friend here. _{[Friendly as always. And you are going to learn coffee, Jack, if it kills him.]}

_{[Jack follows and is happily seated. He tugs one of the little menus sat out on the table over and looks it over. Everything had pictures and everything looked good. WAT DO?]}

And chocolate cake, if you please.

_{[Jack reminds the waitress as he digs out his wallet. He wasn't terribly fussy with his money so this was going to be a fun experience!]}

It would be nice if I could get a job here. I was a waiter in Azalea and I got to meet some of the most interesting people--if only for a little while.

_{[Grinning in approval and adding that he'd also like a slice, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.]}

Hm, maybe I should try that. I only ever took jobs in the Centers with doing the killer paperwork they somehow seem to wind up with. Incredibly boring, but at least it's familiar.

_{[Jack drums his fingers on the table. 8I Cake cake cake cake. HE'S LISTENING, COOP, HONEST HE IS.]}

I have to say again, I appreciate your keeping me company. It was such a nice surprise to see a familiar face in person. That's a long, lonely road through that forest.

On occasion there is something to be said for solitude.

_{[And hello waitress, with cake and coffee. :D Bless all the waitresses in the world for bringing lovely food. That's what Coop looks like he's thinking, anyway, and he digs in on the cake with an immediate blissful expression. MMMM.]}

_{[Jack frowns a little. He didn't mind peace and quiet once in a while but dat forest ;-; ffff]}

_{[NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR MOPING. NOW IS THE TIME FOR CAKE. Jack gives his a very critical look at first, eying it from all angles and prodding at it with his fork. Old habits die hard. Hunger eventually wins over curiosity. The older man's eyes light up.]}

Cooper, I will never doubt another word that comes out of your mouth as long as I live.

_{[Cooper looks up at this, VERY AMUSED, but very warmly so.]}

That's quite a promise, Jack. Here, try it with some ice cream.

_{[Excite to share the joy of sugary goodness, he offers Jack to pick some of the vanilla ice cream of his plate while he takes a sip of the (pretty damn good, but not damn fine) coffee.]}

It's one I'll stand by! This is amazing!

_{[CAKE is now one of Jack's favorite things. Almost as good as theater! It distracts him from what he was on the edge of moping about. Momentarily. The fact that he was eating chocolate reminded him of what a hard time Applejack had with the stuff. Ponies. ;-; Hnnngg.]}

It really is amazing.

_{[...ponies. :C is it time to mope about ponies?]

[Coop sets the cup down and gives Jack a light frown. Yeah, he picks up on mood changes like a dog or something.]}

_{[IT IS TIME TO MOPE ABOUT PONIES. The enormous cutiemarke'd elephant in the room can't be ignored much longer.]}

I hate to be such a soggy grave, Cooper, but I can't help feeling...anxious in this new city.

_{[THEN LET US MOPE. LIKE THE BEST MOPERS.]}

Why's that?

_{[He asks straightforward. Curious, really, but with consideration, as he eats another bit of cake.]}

I'm not quite sure what I'll do with myself in this town as far as meeting people goes. In Cherry Grove I met with Phoenix and he disappeared a little after we reached Violet. I met Rainbow Dash and we traveled to Azalea through that God-awful cave. Then she disappeared too.

_{[8c EVERYTHING I MAKE FRIENDS WITH LEAVES ME ADSFLG. Jack drags his fork across his plate making a terrible sound.]}

It's selfish of me to wish they were here.

_{[Ah. Cooper relates all too well and sets his fork down, expression carefully shielded - but there's a hint that he's pretty damn sad about the leaving-thing in how he breaks eye contact to look down, at nothing in particular.]}

Not at all. It's a natural reaction to missing someone.

_{[He doesn't say that he misses them too, but he does. Especially Dash.]}

Well yes, but everyone I've formed a friendship with has vanished. It sort of makes one worry about talking to people at all. Oh, I'll-- I'll see you tomorrow for a friendly battle and perhaps some tea?

_{[Jack makes a sort of vague gesture with his fork, frowning thoughtfully.]}

I've been dead so long I forgot what it's like to miss someone...not that they're dead! Hah. No, but...but.

_{[ 8C WHY BOTHER TALKING TO ANYONE AT ALL. He squints a little at Cooper. If he looked away would HE disappear?]}

_{[-- oh man that hits a little close. :c Cooper looks troubled, but nods.]}

I'd be happy to see you tomorrow.

_{[And then looks up to study Jack. Sad. Trying to carefully sidestep the things in this conversation that could apply to him.]}

Missing people is a necessary part of life, I suppose. You can't hold on to everyone forever.

_{[Jack blinks, distracted from his tiny rant. He hadn't meant Coop but...that'd be nice ;-;]}

_{[HE'S GRATEFUL, HONEST, but he's sort of staring at his fork.]}

This is true...but it sure makes making friends difficult. It's one thing to worry about their safety, but to know they could just up and vanish?

Listen to me mope. They're probably happy to be home! I know I would be.

_{[Jack watches his icecream start to melt.]}

You were one of Dash's friends. Do you think she'll remember us?

_{[They could both use the distraction, right?]

[Coop looks up again -- he's not sure he'd be happy to be home, even though he knows he has to return at some point. He sighs.]}

I don't know what I think. Most things indicate she wouldn't be able to remember us ... but I hope that she does.
